Excerpts from Mike's Letter Home:

07/07/2003

Dear Family,

It is most saddening to hear that CB has passed away. Though, I did kind of expected him to go while I was on my mission. It is interesting to hear that you are considering getting another rabbit. Very often, parents stop getting pets once the children leave home. Either way, I know that CB brought us all closer together and was a great addition to our family. If you do decide to get a new bunny from the animal shelter, I agree with you it is a good idea to share our home.

Anyways, this week has been really good to me. Last Monday, our District went out bowling. Since a member worked there, we had free shoes and it was only $2 per person for a game. We had quite a bit of fun. Though, I did not do the greatest and could have used many pointers from mom.

The Branch President had a 4th of July flag raising and breakfast. We got to attend the 7:00 a.m. flag raising but had to leave before breakfast to make it up to St. Robert by 9:00 a.m. for a Zone testimony meeting with the new Mission President. It was nice to meet him and his wife. I found amusement that they kept stressing obedience, but it did not seem that they knew the rules yet. Though, I am positive that they have a lot of studying and catching up to do. The rules I am most interested in hearing about possible changes in are e-mail, music, and PDA's. I will let you know if I hear anything. Though, the Mission President and his wife seem like nice, funny people.

Later that day, we ventured out and saw Salem's 4th of July parade. It was exactly what you would expect for a small town, mainly trucks with banners on the side. Though, we did enjoy this nice change from our usual routine. We had a BBQ with the Jacobs family that night. Sister Jacobs makes some great food! They took us with them to see the fireworks at the county fairgrounds (which is called "The Commons"). I really enjoyed the show, and it was significantly better than Mission Viejo's show last year.

I really enjoyed the 4th of July this year. It seems like a great time to reflect on the past year, since I can remember exactly where I was. It has gone by fast, but there is still quite awhile to go. Hopefully, all continues to go well.

Also, some good news is that on July 2nd, I got my teeth cleaned by Kendall R. Jacobs, DMD (better known as Brother Jacobs). Anyways, you will be happy to know that he said there was probably not much build up at all. The whole cleaning took under 20 minutes. He said my teeth looked great and there was no need to polish them. So, I was very pleased with my increased hygiene. I thanked him very much, since he specializes in dentures, yet still offered to clean my teeth (for free!!) Though, I want an appointment with Dr. Anderson after the mission! So, be sure to schedule that into your plans.

I received a package from you today. Thank you Grandma for the candy, I really appreciate it and like what you got me. Mom & Dad, thanks so much for the new slacks, they seem to fit when I quickly tried them on. The Jon Schmidt piano music was a great surprise! Thank you very much. You will definitely have to hear one of his CD's some day (sadly, I only have one... but I will definitely pick up others when I can).

Also good news, all of my white shirts seem whiter thanks to Oxi-Clean. I have heard lots of recommendations for it but finally tried it and it really helped my shirts (it didn't have too much affect on my garments though).

Transfers are this week. I think I have at least a 60% chance of staying. Though, you can never tell. I will let you know as soon as I do. Anyways, we will have to wait and see what happens.

Another piece of interesting info is that our air conditioner was broken from 6/25 to 6/30. Needless to say, we had some very warm days. They could not repair our old unit (which the 10-year warranty on expired 20 days previous to it breaking down). So we have a new Whirlpool model with a remote. It seems to work pretty well, but I do miss central cooling. I did get lots of use out of a fan that I purchased at Wal-Mart due to the breakdown.

Mom asked about the GPS unit. It is doing wonderful and has helped greatly. It is nice for navigation to such things as Zone conference, which are far away and we don't have maps to get there. I have mainly used it recently to see if a media referral is in another missionary's area, since we only have a map of our county. Either way, the GPS is a nice tool which has come a long way.

Anyways, I must be going. I hope that y'all had a great fourth of July. Take care, I miss you greatly!

Love,
Elder Michael Robinson
