Excerpts from Mike's Letter Home:

09/02/2002

Dear Parents,

I hope that you have had a good week. This wonderful stationary was sent to me by Marjorie. It looks pretty nice, but doesn't have lines, so if my writing is crooked, I apologize (it wasn't.)

Anyways, we had our first baptism this week, the 9 year-old son of an inactive mom. It was a nice experience, except there was one major complication. Our ward mission leader told us that is took 1 1/2 hours to fill the baptismal font. This is not uncommon since a lot of fonts in our mission fill up rather slowly. However, we came back to check on it after 1/2 hour, because we were having a district meeting, and the font was overflowing. The wet carpet reminded me of the way our old chapel used to be. Luckily, our whole district decided to help us clean it up. Also, it was kind of nice that our Bishop didn't care. We got it looking pretty good and the service went off without a hitch. His mom even says that they are going to start coming to church more often. So needless to say, after the first baptism on my mission (his uncle did the actual ordinance), I already have a story.

I am glad to hear that mom had a good birthday. Though when you mentioned the movie you saw, I haven't a clue what it's about. So, perhaps you ought to keep a list for me of the good movies in the next 2 years and start stocking up on the Blockbuster gift certificates.

Since you were wondering, no I haven't had too much experience teaching discussions. Sure, I have taught quite a few, but we have had tons of canceled appointments here. It's hard to believe how most people around here do not care about appointments. Sure, I expect a few canceled ones, since we are missionaries. However, I assume that I will quickly get used to that.

The members are pretty nice. Most of them (including the Bishop) are pretty busy getting ready to move, since Phillips 66 merged with Conoco. We have a 50 year-old man with some mental disabilities. This guy wears an old black name tag and thinks that he is a missionary. Yesterday, he followed us around church since he actually thinks he is one of us. So, he is one of the most interesting people in the ward.

You also asked if I was working on the Osage Indian Reservation. Only because the missionaries have been pulled out of Pawhuska, OK. We only go to Pawhuska on Thursdays and part of Sunday. So, we haven't spent much time on the reservation. However, I get to take the sacrament twice on Sunday. My companion lets me be in charge of Pawhuska, because it is a smaller area. Learning how to run that area will help me learn more and be a better missionary down the road. Also of note is Pawhuska had the first Boy Scout Troop in the U.S. (1909), under the charter from the Boy Scouts of the U.K. An English missionary (not our church) started it there.

Anyways, I wish you the best!

Love,
Elder Michael Robinson
